Disaster Management & Resilient Infrastructure
Nodal Institute(s): IIT Tirupati with IIT Guwahati
Theme Overview
The increasing frequency and severity of climate-induced and manmade disasters, such as floods, cyclones, landslides, and seismic events, underscore the urgent need for resilient built infrastructure. Rapid urbanisation and ageing infrastructure in India highlight the importance of integrated, multidisciplinary strategies to ensure resilient infrastructure along with disaster management for a sustainable and secure future, especially in an era of escalating climate change and increasing natural hazards. Disaster Management & Resilient Infrastructure is one of the identified thematic areas through which the strengths of India could be showcased through the technological development and startup initiatives undertaken by the Entrepreneurs associated with the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions and other Central Research Organizations.
Disaster management and resilient infrastructure are critical for protecting lives, property, and economic assets in an era of increasing climate risks and natural disasters.
India’s geographic diversity and exposure to various natural hazards from cyclones and floods to earthquakes and droughts necessitate innovative approaches to prediction, prevention, response, and recovery. This theme will encompass early warning systems, structural resilience technologies, emergency response solutions, and infrastructure design innovations that can withstand and recover from disasters. The focus includes technological solutions, system-level approaches and other solutions that enhance community resilience and reduce disaster impact through better preparedness and response capabilities.
