Solid State Transformers (SSTs)
SiC based Modular solid-state transformers for next-generation electrical infrastructure
Vision
Enable next-generation energy infrastructure using Solid State Transformers for efficient, compact, and scalable power delivery across AI datacenters, EV charging, and renewables.
Problem
Conventional power systems face efficiency loss, high copper usage, thermal challenges, and scalability limitations for high-density AI loads, EV fast charging, and renewable integration.
Solution
Develop medium-voltage Solid State Transformer technology enabling direct MVAC to 800 VDC conversion with improved efficiency, reduced copper requirement, and compact architecture.
Potential
SST deployment can support future AI datacenters with 1 MW+ rack density, fast EV charging, and renewable microgrids, enabling large-scale global adoption over the next decade.
Target Beneficiaries
AI datacenter operators, EV charging infrastructure providers, renewable energy integrators, BESS developers, industrial facilities, and power system operators globally.
Current Users
Developed and demonstrated a 2 kV SST power module using 3.3 kV SiC devices at IIT Bombay; 200 kW prototype development underway for future pilot deployments.
