LC3- Limestone Calcined Clay Cement
Low carbon Sustainable Cement – LC3
Vision
Make cement production easier-to-abate!
Problem
Cement, a mix of clinker and gypsum, causes ~7–8% of CO2 emissions—over half from raw-material decomposition, not just fuel—making it hard-to-abate. Any solution must work at scale worldwide.
Solution
We scale LC3 using calcined clay and crushed limestone; it needs up to 50% less energy and existing technology, matching or beating traditional cement in over 90% of applications.
Potential
Using IIT Delhi's developments, LC3 can replace over 90% of global cement production without compromising performance—suitable for growing economies and easily adopted by developed ones.
Target Beneficiaries
Targets the cement and construction industries: cutting CO2 emissions and production cost, and strongly benefiting developing economies.
Current Users
Commercially produced in 10+ countries. In India, first produced by JK Cement (Rajasthan) and used in projects including Lodha's Palava City, Noida airport, and IIT Delhi's Sonipat campus.
