CCS Enabled CTM
Convert high-ash coal and captured CO2 into methanol
Vision
A scalable indigenous platform converting high-ash coal, biomass, petroleum coke, and captured CO₂ into methanol, hydrogen, and clean fuels for sustainable energy security.
Problem
To achieve net-zero targets and secure energy independence, this project tackles India's high reliance on imported fuels by converting abundant, high-ash domestic coal and captured carbon emissions into clean methanol.
Solution
Convert high-ash coal into methanol through oxy-blown fluid bed gasification with ongoing work to recycle captured CO₂ into additional methanol, enabling cleaner and more sustainable fuel production.
Potential
Enables large-scale domestic production of methanol (precursor to DME, olefins, oligomers, jet fuels), hydrogen, and ammonia from Indian coal and biomass, supporting India’s growing energy and chemical sectors.
Target Beneficiaries
Indian energy, chemical, fertilizer, and transport sectors, coal-producing regions, and global industries seeking scalable low-carbon pathways for fuels (methanol, dimethyl ether (DME), hydrogen) and chemicals (petrochemicals, fertilizer) manufacturing.
Current Users
Methanol from multiple high-ash Indian coals demonstrated in a 1 TPD pilot at Thermax. LOA secured for a 5 TPD green-methanol facility at Deendayal Port, Gandhigram, Gujarat.
